Make Me Beautiful – Pre and Post-Operative Spa Treatments

By Lain Chroust Ehmann

Pre- and post-operative spa treatments can enhance your cosmetic surgery.

Many people who undergo cosmetic surgery – from liposuction to eye lifts – may be overlooking an effective partner in their treatment and healing: their Aesthetician.

Spas and cosmetic physicians around the country are recognizing the benefits of working together to help individuals make the most of their procedures. A specifically designed regimen for before and after surgery can help prepare the skin for treatment, maximize results, minimize discomfort and speed healing.

"We really do believe you need to prepare the skin before surgery," says Lauri Kane, R.D., MPH, Sc.D.. Dr. Kane and her husband, Dean Kane, M.D., F.A.C.S., have a cosmetic surgery practice in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Dean Kane is director of The Wound Center at Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown, MD and associate clinical professor, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Though doctors have different opinions about what treatments – if any – you should undergo before and after your surgery, many professionals do recommend some common ones.

For General Relaxation

Often, people about to have surgery of any kind are, understandably, a bit tense. Thankfully, many spa treatments are custom-made to help people de-stress. Jennifer Dixon, head spa technician for Amadeus Spa in Los Angeles, recommends that a few days prior to any sort of cosmetic surgery, that clients take advantage of Amadeus' hydrotherapy soak and massage combo, called the "Thirty-Thirty". "It's sort of a way to help people relax and feel more calm before going into surgery," she says.

Not only will the thirty minutes spent in the 60-jet tub followed by half an hour on the massage table help you banish your worries, it will also assist in detoxifying your body through stimulating the lymphatic system, says Dixon.
