Though it's far from a secret in your view, it may be something some plastic surgeons and medical spas don't know: skin of color responds differently than Caucasian skin to many procedures and treatments. If your background is African-American, Hispanic, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Asian or another ethnic group with darker skin, you already know your skin tends to be sensitive and scar easily. It may also be prone to discoloration if not treated gently.
At the same time, people with darker skin often have problems they'd like to address so they can look and feel their best. For instance, many are concerned about excessive hair. Others have areas of fine lines and wrinkles and uneven pigmentation, including both light spots and dark spots, resulting from environmental damage or the aging process.
At the Center for Cosmetic Surgery & MediSpa, we're not only acquainted with the special needs of African-American, Asian and Hispanic patients, we specialize in designing individualized, safe and effective treatment. We have been working with patients of all ethnicities for many years, and we're pleased that our practice reflects the diversity of the communities that surround us.
No matter what color your skin is, we can offer a variety of safe and effective ways to enhance your appearance. With many years of research and practice, we've learned which treatments will work well for patients of color. The following are just a few examples.
If you're interested in non-surgical rejuvenation, Juvéderm™ is a popular injectable filler approved by the FDA for all skin types and colors. Dr. Kane uses Juvéderm™ to plump up the lines called "parentheses" that run from your nose to your mouth and fill small wrinkles around the lips. It can also be used to add fullness to the lips themselves, fill hollows under the eyes and sculpt the cheeks, nose, chin and jaw line without surgery.
People of all colors, not just those with Northern European backgrounds, suffer sun damage. We offer Levulan® Photodynamic therapy and the V-Beam® laser to gently minimize the impact of sun damage and remove actinic keratoses, or pre-cancerous lesions, and vascular capillaries.
Laser hair removal can be a great option for patients with darker skin, helping them avoid the potential dark spots and scars that can result from other methods of hair removal. The lasers we use at the Center for Cosmetic Surgery & MediSpa are safe for all skin types, including the darkest African-American skin tones.
